Painters in the Adelaide Hills

The Adelaide Hills rise straight behind the city, 20 to 50 minutes east of the CBD along the South Eastern Freeway. Stirling, Aldgate, Crafers and Bridgewater are the leafy villages closest to town, with big deciduous gardens and cold winters. Hahndorf, Balhannah and Oakbank sit in the Onkaparinga valley. Mount Barker, Littlehampton and Nairne make up the growth end of the region, with new estates spreading around old town centres. Further north, Woodside, Lobethal, Gumeracha and Birdwood are old stone townships among orchards, vineyards and dairy country, and Kersbrook and Cudlee Creek sit in the bushland behind them. To the south, Echunga, Meadows, Macclesfield and Clarendon are small rural townships and hobby farms. It is a wetter, cooler and greener place than the plains below.

Hills housing is as varied as the terrain. Hahndorf, Lobethal, Woodside, Gumeracha and Mount Torrens have 1840s to 1880s settler cottages and shopfronts in local stone with lime mortar, some with timber-framed and rendered walls. Stirling, Aldgate, Crafers and Heathfield hold Victorian and Edwardian summer residences, weatherboard cottages and 1970s timber pole homes tucked into bush blocks, alongside newer architect-designed houses. Mount Barker, Littlehampton and Nairne have old stone cores wrapped in decades of growth, and the newest estates there are brick veneer, render, Hebel and Colorbond. Lenswood, Forest Range, Uraidla and Summertown are orchard and market garden country with farmhouses, packing sheds and cool stores. Local painting considerations

  • Shade, damp and mould

    The Hills are cooler and wetter than the plains, and the big trees in Stirling, Aldgate, Bridgewater and Crafers keep south-facing walls, eaves and decks in shade for months. Mould and mildew grow on paint that never dries out. Every exterior gets an anti-mould wash before preparation, we use mould-resistant paints on shaded elevations and under eaves, and we tell clients plainly that timber up here needs recoating more often than it would in the suburbs. Fixing leaks, gutters and drainage first stops the problem coming straight back.

  • Bushfire-prone area maintenance

    Much of the Hills, from Cudlee Creek and Kersbrook to Mylor and Kangarilla, is bushfire-prone land with BAL ratings under AS 3959. Paint does not change a building's BAL rating and no paint makes a house fire-proof, so we do not claim it. What we can do is keep timber decks, verandahs, fascias and cladding sound and sealed, and use intumescent coatings on steel only where an engineer has specified them. Rebuilds after the fires around Cudlee Creek and Lobethal are new build painting on lightweight cladding and steel.

  • Settler stone and lime mortar

    The cottages and shopfronts of Hahndorf, Lobethal, Gumeracha and Mount Torrens were built with soft local stone and lime mortar that must breathe. We never paint bare stone, and where earlier owners rendered or painted it we use breathable mineral or lime-based coatings rather than sealing it under acrylic, which traps moisture and blows the render off. Timber joinery, shutters, verandah posts and iron are prepared and painted to AS/NZS 2311:2017, and any pre-1970 paint is treated as lead-bearing under AS/NZS 4361.2:2017.

  • Cold, fog and short drying days

    Winter in Stirling, Piccadilly, Uraidla and Mount Barker brings frost, fog and days that never reach the minimum temperature water-based paints need to cure. Dew settles on fresh coats overnight and leaves surfactant streaks. We schedule exterior work in the Hills for the drier months, start later in the morning once surfaces are dry, stop early so the last coat sets before the dew, and keep interior work for the wet weeks. Waiting for the right window saves a recoat.

Do you paint right across the Adelaide Hills, or just the freeway towns?

Is there a paint that will protect our house from bushfire?
No. Paint does not change a building's BAL rating under AS 3959, and we will not sell you a fire-proof coating because there is no such thing for a house. Intumescent coatings exist for structural steel, but they are specified by an engineer as part of a rated system, not chosen off the shelf. What good painting does do is keep decks, verandahs, timber cladding and fascias sound, so there are fewer cracks and gaps for embers to catch in and the timber lasts longer between replacements.
When is the best time of year to paint the outside of a Hills home?
Late spring through to early autumn, when surfaces dry out and overnight temperatures stay above the minimum the paint needs to cure. Winter in Stirling, Piccadilly or Mount Barker brings fog, frost and dew that spoil fresh coats, so we hold exterior work for the drier months and use the wet weeks for interiors. If your timber or render is failing badly we can still do the preparation and priming in a dry spell and return for topcoats when conditions allow.
Do you charge extra to travel in the Adelaide Hills?
Across metropolitan Adelaide there is no travel loading. For regional and remote parts of South Australia we build travel and, where needed, accommodation into the written quote up front so there are no surprises, and we group jobs in the same area where we can to keep costs down.
