The Lands are reached from the Stuart Highway at Marla, then by unsealed road west through Iwantja and Mimili to Umuwa, the administrative centre, and on to Pukatja and Amata at the foot of the Musgraves. Further west lie Kanpi, Nyapari and Murputja, and at the far end Pipalyatjara and Kalka. Kaltjiti sits south of Umuwa, Watarru is out to the south-west, and Yunyarinyi lies north-east of Pukatja. De Rose Hill, Tieyon and Lambina are pastoral country on the eastern side. Pitjantjatjara and Yankunytjatjara are the languages of the communities, and it is more than a day's drive from Adelaide.

  • Permits, roads and planning

    Anyone who is not a resident needs a permit from APY to enter the Lands, so every job starts with paperwork, usually backed by the organisation engaging us. The roads west of Marla are unsealed and close after rain, and there is no paint shop between the highway and Kalka. We order the full job from plans and photos, carry spares of every colour and sundry, confirm accommodation with the community or contractor, and book work in blocks so one trip covers preparation through to the last coat.

    Community housing, schools, clinics and stores take heavy use, and a repaint has to last between maintenance rounds. Dust is washed off before any preparation and chalky surfaces are sealed. Summer coats go on early in the morning; in winter the day starts once the substrate has warmed through.
