  • Lead dust and old lead paint

We live close to the smelter. Does that change how you paint our house?
It changes the preparation and the clean-up more than the paint. Surfaces near the smelter carry lead dust, and homes in Solomontown and Risdon Park older than 1970 will have lead paint under the current coats as well. We wash everything down first, use wet sanding or chemical stripping with containment instead of dry sanding or burning, keep sound old paint in place and overcoat it, and collect and remove our waste rather than leaving it in the yard. All of it follows AS/NZS 4361.2:2017.
Is it worth repainting a fibro shack at Fisherman Bay?
Usually yes, provided the sheeting is intact. Fibro shacks at Fisherman Bay, Port Davis and Weeroona Island can be painted safely as long as nobody sands or water-blasts them, so we clean them gently by hand, prime bare or chalky sheeting and apply a 100% acrylic topcoat that stands up to salt and sun. Rusted iron, gutters and window frames are treated with a corrosion-inhibiting primer first. A repaint every few years is a lot less work than replacing sheeting, and it keeps the salt out of the frame.
