Local painting considerations

• Salt spray along the coast

  Everything from West Beach to Outer Harbor cops salt-laden wind, and steel is the first casualty: gates, balustrades, roofs, gutters and window frames rust from the edges in. We wash exteriors down before any paint goes on, treat rust back to sound metal, prime with a corrosion-inhibiting primer, and finish steel with a marine-grade system. Walls get a 100% acrylic topcoat that holds its colour in the sun. Beachfront homes at Semaphore and Grange do best with a fresh-water wash-down each year to keep the salt off.

• Reactive clay and cracked render

  The inner west, from Mile End and Torrensville through to Woodville, sits on clay that swells after winter rain and shrinks through summer. Rendered walls crack at corners, window heads and where extensions meet the original house. Painting over a live crack only hides it for a season. We rake out and fill with flexible fillers, then use an elastomeric membrane coating over cracked render so the film stretches with the wall. On hairline crazing a high-build acrylic often does the job on its own.

• Lead paint and fibro sheeting

  Cottages and villas in Port Adelaide, Alberton and Semaphore built before 1970 almost always carry lead paint under the later coats, and post-war homes in Pennington and Athol Park often have fibro sheeting on eaves, sleepouts and lean-tos. Both are managed, not attacked. Lead paint is overcoated where sound and wet sanded or stripped under containment where it is failing, following AS/NZS 4361.2:2017. Intact fibro is washed gently by hand and painted, never sanded or water-blasted. Bluestone stays bare; we paint the render, timber and iron around it.

• Industrial atmospheres near the Port

  Wingfield, Gillman, Regency Park and the Port Adelaide waterfront carry a harder atmosphere: salt, diesel, dust and fallout from neighbouring plants. Steel structures, tanks, sheds and plant here are coated to AS/NZS 2312.1:2014, with the system chosen for the corrosivity of the site rather than a one-size approach. Abrasive blasting or mechanical preparation, zinc-rich or epoxy primers and polyurethane topcoats are typical. Inside the sheds we handle floor painting and line marking, with slip resistance checked under AS 4586 on ramps and walkways.
