The Copper Coast towns of Kadina, Moonta and Wallaroo sit at the top, built on the Cornish copper mines of the 1860s and now ringed by beach settlements at Moonta Bay, Port Hughes and North Beach. Down the east coast, Ardrossan's red cliffs and long jetty give way to the holiday towns of Port Vincent, Stansbury and Edithburgh. Maitland and Minlaton serve the grain and sheep country through the middle, Yorketown sits among the salt lakes at the foot, and the road runs on to Marion Bay, Corny Point and the beaches of Innes National Park. It is farming and fishing country with a large population of Adelaide shack owners.

The Copper Coast has some of regional South Australia's oldest housing. Moonta Mines, Moonta and Kadina have 1860s to 1900s limestone miners' cottages laid in lime mortar, with stone shopfronts, chapels and pubs. Wallaroo mixes stone cottages near the port with post-war Housing Trust homes, 1970s brick veneer and new rendered and Colorbond homes by the marina. Moonta Bay, Port Hughes, North Beach and Tickera are shack country: fibro and transportable holiday homes joined by larger brick and lightweight-clad builds. On the east coast, Ardrossan, Port Vincent, Stansbury, Edithburgh and Coobowie have the same mix of old stone, fibro shacks and newer holiday homes. Maitland, Minlaton, Warooka and Yorketown are stone townships with brick homes on their edges, and the farms between them are stone homesteads and steel sheds.

Local painting considerations

  • Salt from two gulfs

    No part of the peninsula is far from salt water. Moonta Bay, Port Hughes and Wallaroo take westerlies straight off Spencer Gulf, while Ardrossan, Port Vincent and Edithburgh face Gulf St Vincent. Salt settles on the paint film and eats into gutters, downpipes, railings and shed cladding. Coastal exteriors get a fresh-water wash before any sanding, corrosion-inhibiting primers on all steel, marine-grade coatings on exposed metal and UV-resistant 100% acrylic topcoats. The elevation facing the water is always inspected first.

  • Cornish miners' cottages on the Copper Coast

    Miners' cottages in Moonta Mines, Moonta and Kadina are limestone laid in lime mortar, and most were limewashed or painted long before 1970. The stone needs to breathe, so we never seal it under a hard film. Previously painted stone and render get breathable coatings and lime-compatible repairs. Old coats are assumed to contain lead and handled under AS/NZS 4361.2:2017: wet sanding or chemical stripping with containment, never dry sanding or burning off. Sound paint stays in place and is overcoated.

  • Shacks, fibro and absent owners

    A large share of the homes at Port Hughes, Stansbury, Black Point and Marion Bay are holiday houses whose owners live in Adelaide. Many older shacks are fibro, which can be washed by hand, primed and painted while intact but must never be sanded or water-blasted. We arrange keys and access with the owner, send progress photos, and time exteriors for the drier months. A repaint every few years keeps salt and sun out of the sheeting and the frame behind it.

  • Heat, UV and harvest dust

    Summers on the peninsula are hot and dry, and the UV chalks and fades a cheap paint film within a few seasons. Dark colours on Colorbond roofs and steel walls run much hotter than light ones, so we steer owners around Maitland, Minlaton and Kadina towards lighter roof colours and heat-reflective roof coatings. At harvest, wind-blown dust from the grain paddocks settles on every surface, so exterior work is washed down again before topcoats and scheduled around the worst of it.

I live in Adelaide and the shack is at Port Hughes. How does quoting work?
You send us photos and we do the rest. Photograph each elevation and room, note anything peeling, rusty or cracked, and tell us the colours you have in mind. We send an itemised quote from that, then confirm it on site, either on a quoting trip or on the way to another Copper Coast job. Keys can be left with a neighbour, an agent or a lockbox, and we send photos as the work progresses so you do not need to drive up until it is finished.
Can you paint the old limestone cottage we bought in Moonta Mines?
Yes, as long as the approach suits the stone. Bare, unpainted limestone is usually best left bare and repointed with lime mortar rather than painted. Stone and render that has been painted before is washed, repaired with lime-compatible fillers and recoated with a breathable system so moisture can still move through the wall. Any paint applied before 1970 is treated as lead paint and managed under AS/NZS 4361.2:2017. Timber fretwork, verandah posts and windows get the usual sand, prime and two topcoats.
Do you charge extra to travel on the Yorke Peninsula?
