Murray Bridge, about an hour down the freeway, is the regional centre, with Strathalbyn and the Langhorne Creek vineyards to its west and Tailem Bend, Wellington and Meningie down the river towards Lake Albert and the Coorong. Upstream, the river towns of Mannum, Swan Reach, Blanchetown and Morgan sit under limestone cliffs, with shack settlements at Bowhill, Walker Flat and Purnong between them. East of Tailem Bend the Mallee Highway runs out through Lameroo and Pinnaroo to the Victorian border, the Karoonda Highway heads north-east from Murray Bridge to Karoonda, and the Dukes Highway passes Coonalpyn and Tintinara on the way to the South East. Grain, irrigation, dairy, tourism and the river shape almost every town.

Strathalbyn is the region's showpiece for old stone: 1840s to 1900s cottages, churches and shopfronts in local stone and lime mortar, ringed by newer brick veneer and rendered estates. Murray Bridge has a stone and red brick core from its railway and river days, wide belts of post-war Housing Trust and 1970s brick veneer through Murray Bridge East and Murray Bridge South, and new estates at Northern Heights. Mannum and Morgan keep 1800s river port buildings, while the river is lined with shacks at Bowhill, Walker Flat, Caloote and Younghusband, mostly fibro, timber or Colorbond on raised frames. Karoonda, Lameroo and Pinnaroo are 1900s railway towns with stone and weatherboard cottages, post-war brick and fibro, and farmhouses beside steel sheds. Meningie has fibro and brick lakeside homes and shacks.

Local painting considerations

  • Mallee heat, dust and UV

    Karoonda, Lameroo, Pinnaroo and the farms between them are hot, dry and dusty in summer, with more UV and less shade than the coast. Heat and UV break down binders and pigments, so every exterior gets a UV-resistant 100% acrylic system, and we steer clients towards lighter colours on Colorbond, roofs and weatherboard because dark colours run hotter and fade faster. Wind-blown dust settles on everything, so surfaces are washed and dried before priming, and we start early so coats are on before the heat peaks.

  • River shacks, damp and floods

    Shacks at Walker Flat, Bowhill, Purnong and Caloote sit right on the water, and many went under in the 2022 and 2023 floods. Painting a flooded shack too early traps moisture, so we check timber and wall linings with a moisture meter first, strip anything that has lifted, treat mould with an anti-mould wash, and prime bare timber and fibro before topcoating. On any river shack the shaded, damp side needs mould-resistant paint, and steel posts, stairs and railings need rust treatment and a corrosion-inhibiting primer.

  • Stone towns and lead paint

    Strathalbyn, Mannum, Morgan and the older streets of Murray Bridge are full of pre-1900 stone with lime mortar. Bare stone is never painted, and where stone has already been rendered or painted we use breathable coatings so trapped moisture does not blow the render off. Timber verandahs, fretwork, doors and windows are prepared and painted to AS/NZS 2311:2017. Because most of these buildings were painted before 1970, lead paint is assumed and managed under AS/NZS 4361.2:2017: wet sanding, containment, no dry sanding or open-flame burning, and careful clean-up.

  • Sheds, silos and industrial steel

    Farm sheds, grain storage, workshops and processing plants are a big part of the work out here. Steel in Murray Bridge, Tailem Bend and the Mallee towns has heat, dust and, near Meningie and the Coorong, salt-laden wind to contend with. We specify protective coating systems to AS/NZS 2312.1:2014, prepare steel properly before priming, and use APAS-approved products where a spec calls for them. Floor painting and line marking for depots and workshops are assessed for slip resistance under AS 4586, and commercial work is scheduled around trading hours.

Our shack at Walker Flat was flooded. Can it be repainted?
Yes, once it has dried out properly, and we will not start before then. We check timber, fibro and plasterboard with a moisture meter, and anything still holding water waits. Then failed paint is stripped, mould is treated with an anti-mould wash, bare surfaces are primed, and mould-resistant paints go on the damp, shaded side. Steel posts, stairs and railings get rust treatment and a corrosion-inhibiting primer. Where linings are swollen or crumbling we tell you to replace them before we paint, because paint will not fix that.
Can you paint outside in a Mallee summer?
We can, but we plan around the heat rather than fight it. Water-based paints applied to a hot wall in Lameroo or Pinnaroo skin over before they level, so we start early, follow the shade around the house, and stop when the surface is too hot to touch. Dark colours make it worse because they hold heat, and heat-reflective roof coatings help. When the forecast is brutal we hold exterior work and get on with interiors, which is a good use of the hottest weeks.
Do you charge extra to travel in the Murraylands?
Across metropolitan Adelaide there is no travel loading. For regional and remote parts of South Australia we build travel and, where needed, accommodation into the written quote up front so there are no surprises, and we group jobs in the same area where we can to keep costs down.
