Two roads carry most of the traffic. The Stuart Highway passes Pimba and Woomera, the roadhouse at Glendambo, then Coober Pedy with its opal fields and dugouts, and on to Marla. The other road goes north from Leigh Creek through Lyndhurst to Marree, where the Oodnadatta and Birdsville Tracks begin, and out to William Creek, Oodnadatta and Innamincka. Roxby Downs was built to house the Olympic Dam mine, and Andamooka digs for opal nearby. Between the towns are salt lakes, the Simpson and Strzelecki deserts and cattle stations that stretch for hours in every direction.

Local painting considerations

  • Sun with nothing to soften it

    Oodnadatta, Coober Pedy and Roxby Downs are among the hottest places in Australia, with clear skies, hard UV and cold winter nights. Paint chalks, fades and shrinks back from edges long before it would in Adelaide. We use 100% acrylic exterior topcoats for UV resistance, light colours on roofs, steel and walls, and heat-reflective roof coatings where an iron or Colorbond roof sits over living space. Application is timed to the data sheet: early starts in summer, the warm middle of the day in winter.

  • Red dust and wind

    Dust is the other constant. It sits on every horizontal surface, packs into the corners of verandahs and window sills, and will settle on a wet coat if the wind gets up. Every exterior gets a thorough wash and a check for chalking before any sanding, and powdery substrates are bound with a sealer before topcoating. We watch the forecast and keep exterior coats to the still hours. Inside dugouts and homes, dust means washable low-sheen finishes that can be wiped down rather than repainted.

Industrial painting here means surface preparation to the specified class, zinc-rich or epoxy primers and topcoats chosen from AS/NZS 2312.1:2014 to match the exposure, with APAS-approved products where the specification asks for them. Workshop and depot floors get slip-resistant coatings assessed under AS 4586, and we line mark car parks, hardstands and pedestrian walkways so the site reads clearly.

    A Coober Pedy dugout is cut straight into the rock, and untreated walls shed fine dust for years. Most dugout work is sealing: the sandstone is brushed down and coated with a clear sealer so the natural colour and tool marks stay visible but the dust stops. Where owners want painted rooms, usually kitchens and bathrooms, the sealed rock or rendered surfaces are primed and finished with washable acrylics. Ventilation is limited underground, so we use low-odour, low-VOC water-based products and keep the air moving.

How long will an exterior repaint last in the outback sun?
Less time than it would in Adelaide, and the north and west walls and the roof go first. UV, heat and dust are relentless, so the system matters more than the brand: a clean, sound substrate, chalky surfaces sealed, steel primed against rust, and UV-resistant 100% acrylic topcoats in lighter colours. A dark wall or roof in Coober Pedy or Roxby Downs will run much hotter and fade faster than a light one. After that, a hose-down once or twice a year and early touch-ups on chips and edges keep the film intact for much longer.
